Venues – Where to get a room
Make sure whatever room you’re using is as comfortable and distraction free as possible. It’s very distracting to do a talk about hypnosis for weight loss if you’re in a room next to a delicious-smelling pizza parlor! Check for things like bright light coming into the room toward your audience, or a noisy aerobics class being held upstairs!
Local Public Libraries
They always have free rooms for public events. Contact your local library and ask about using a room for January 4th!
Health food stores, day spas/salons, hotels, motels, office buildings with training facilities, bookstores, library, industries, clubs and organisations, churches. Even Hotels & Motels may agree to furnish a room free of charge for a free event. Don’t be afraid to ask. Especially small independent New Age or Metaphysical book stores -- They are usually looking for events to get people into their store. Tell them you will be advertising the lecture/demo in the local media and hope to get media coverage at this event. This will give their business LOTS of FREE advertising.
Venues – How to set up your room
Keep it simple and professional. Usually a PA system won't be necessary unless you've booked a huge lecture hall for hundreds of people.
Have business cards, pamphlets on hypnosis set up on a table. If you can have a friend or someone as a “helper” for your event, they can greet people and hand out your info. If you don't have a personal brochure or pamphlets, contact NGH – you can buy a copy-ready set of “master brochures”.
Have at least one clipboard with paper and pen on the table to get people’s names, addresses, emails etc, so you can contact them for your next event – or for direct mail or email marketing.
You’d prefer to have people seated without tables in front of them. This way you can better see how they’re responding if you do group suggestibility tests, or group hypnosis demos.
You may have a “Back of the Room” sales table – to sell books, tapes, CD. etc. If you don’t have your own products – you might consider selling the “Official Consumer Guide to Hypnotism” published by the National Guild of Hypnotists.
If you are accepting donations for a charity, be sure to have receipts available for tax deductions. You may want to have flyers or brochures from the charity available on your back table.
How to Advertise Your Seminar for FREE
List it as an event for the World Hypnotism Day Ireland public website by entering your information on the World Hypnotism Day Ireland website page of events around Ireland.
- Craigslist at www.Craigslist.org
- Community “Bulletin Boards” or “Calendars” or “Health and Medical Events” in all local newspapers “Free” or “throw-away” classified ad papers... will often donate an add space for a free event.
- Contact clubs or a church you belong to, and have them list it in their bulletin or newsletter.
- Contact local newspapers with a press release, saying you’re available for interviews.
- Contact local cable TV to list on their video “Community Events Calendar” and also ask for an interview.
- List your event details at the bottom of all the emails you send out as your “Signature.”
- Send an email “ad” for your seminar to everyone in your email address book, and ask everyone to pass it on.
- Call local radio stations and ask if they broadcast free PSA's for free public events. Keep script for
them to record short and to the point. They usually require 30 second slots.
- Create fliers and hand them out. If you will be at a store, create a flier in advance announcing the date, time etc. Bring it to the store and ask them to keep it on their counter at the cash register. More FREE advertising for their business. Have friends and clients leave fliers at the gym, in the lunchroom at their work, etc.
How to “Work the Room”
How to "work the room" – keep questions and answers under control, keep people in line, interested, etc.
Be personable. Give personal examples of how hypnosis has helped you. Give ‘generic’ client testimonials (without identifying client). Keep them engaged by doing group suggestibility exercises.
If someone interrupts, let them know they'll have a chance to ask questions at the end of your talk. Be definite that you are not here to play “prove it” with anyone.
How to field questions: If someone gives a negative testimony (I tried hypnosis and it didn't work) use it to your advantage. "Chances are you didn't fully understand about being in hypnosis, or maybe you just weren't ready to make that change. Remember, hypnosis is not mind control. Even the best hypnotist can't make you do something against your will. You need to WANT to create change.”
If someone wants to go into a discussion about their person problems and “can you help me” – tell them you’re happy to talk to them personally at the end of your seminar, or do a free phone consultation with them.
Follow-up
Give a conclusion about hypnosis and how it can be used for change. Leave them inspired and looking forward to lots of potential for change! Let them know you'll be available at the back of the room if they have more questions or would like to take home information. Let them know if you’re available for a free phone consultation later. You may also want to bring your calendar and book appointments right then for folks who are interested.
Send a “Thank You” email, notecard or flyer to everyone who attended. You might also include a discount for your first session” offer or some other incentive for them to book an appointment with you.
